On Monday, we took a two-hour drive south and arrived at the
Cog Railway Depot in
Manitou Springs at the base of Pikes Peak

Kathi Waind, an old friend of Susan's from high school. We boarded the cog railroad train (BTW, we had the best seats on the train in the front row right next to the engineer) and rode up the steep (up to 26% grade) mountainside for about 1.5 hours before arriving at the top of Pikes Peak.
Just as we were arriving it started to snow! It stopped as we got off the train. Needless to say, it was COLD, the scenery was breathtaking and, at over 14,000 feet above sea level, we were suffering from mild altitude sickness. It didn't take long to see the views and head indoors for lunch before descending back down the mountain. This time, we had a beautiful view out the back of the train. It was so nice to breathe normally again when we got back to the station. What a wonderful day and certainly one of the highlights of our trip so far.
